Limerick School of Music

Return to Learning September 2021

Advice Sheet for Parents/Guardians/Learners

All guidance is subject to government updates on an ongoing basis

We are very much looking forward to welcoming back our students to live lessons at Limerick School of Music. For the safety of our whole community, please read the following information regarding the protocols that will apply as we return to teaching and learning from Monday 6th September. See the Info Tab for up-to-date information on Theory and Ensemble Timetables and the School Calendar for the year 2021 - 2022 which is also printed in your LSOM School Journal.

Knowing the Symptoms of COVID-19

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 it is important to know and recognise the symptoms.

If you/your child complains of any of these symptoms, please stay/keep your child at home and call your GP immediately.  If your child becomes unwell while at LSOM we will need you or a nominated person to be available to come and collect your child. Please ensure we hold up-to-date contact details for you.

We will follow all public health advice in the event of a suspected case of Covid 19 including the use of an isolation room and correct procedures.

In the event that a student is directed by the HSE to self-isolate or restrict their movements LSOM will facilitate (in so far as possible) an online live practical lesson and the student will also be able to follow their theory class on Google Classroom.

Parents in LSOM

  • Public health advice is that access to our school buildings is only for students and staff, therefore there is no facility for parents or anyone else to enter the school building.
  • In the first week of lessons, new, young students may be accompanied by one parent only to the door of the lesson.
  • Your first point of contact is to phone/email the school. We welcome contact with parents but most of our conversations with you will either be on the phone or online if at all possible.
  • Should we have to meet with you, it will be on an appointment-only basis.

Arriving at and leaving the school building at LSOM

  • When you drop your child to LSOM please do not drop them earlier than a few minutes before their lesson is due to commence.
  • There is no waiting area facility in the school foyer.
  • Parents are required to observe and respect social distancing protocols in relation to any contact with the school: this includes maintaining a 2-metre distance from other families when dropping off or collecting children from school.
  • At the time of their lesson, students must go straight to the room where their lesson is due to take place/theory room as applicable. On arrival at the teaching room students must practice social distancing and follow the directions of their teacher.
  • Students must use hand sanitiser on entry at all times.

A new system of entry and exit is now in place at LSOM

  • Entry for everyone is through the main front door as usual.
  • Ground floor students (Hall, Rooms 1, 2 & 3) will exit through the main front door.
  • First floor students in Rooms 4, 5 and 6 will exit through the fire-escape back stairs on the second floor (near rooms 12, 14 and 15)
  • Students in Rooms 7, 7a, 8, 9, 10 and 11 will exit through the fire-escape back stairs on the second floor (near rooms 12, 14 and 15)
  • Students in rooms 12-18 must exit using the fire-escape back stairs on the second floor (near rooms 12 - 15).
  • Please ensure that the responsible parent/guardian is present punctually at the correct entrance / exit to collect our younger students.
  • Students waiting to enter the theory room G7 in LCFE or prefabs for theory classes must practise social distancing.

Face Coverings

  • Primary School Students:

In line with government advice for mainstream school settings, face coverings for primary school students are generally optional at LSOM in their practical lessons and around the school. There are however some notable exceptions, as follows:

All singing students are required to wear face coverings unless otherwise directed.

All theory students from Grade 3 upwards are required to wear a face covering in their theory classes.

  • Secondary School & Adult Learners

Face coverings for students who attend secondary school, adult learners and teachers are compulsory as follows: upon entering the building, moving around the building and in all theory and singing classes.

  • Those students who are obliged to wear face coverings should provide their own cloth face covering.
  • Students are reminded to also have a small plastic bag for use when not wearing the mask.
  • The face coverings should cover the mouth, nose and extend under the chin.

One-to-One & Groups of 2: Instrumental and Vocal Class

  • Our instrumental/vocal teaching rooms will be regularly and thoroughly cleaned and ventilated in between lessons.
  • Students must wash/sanitise their hands prior to entering any room in the building and must co-operate with the teacher at all times as to their movements in the teaching room.
  • It will be compulsory for all singing students to wear masks during their lessons.
  • Students of wind and brass instruments will be advised individually by their teachers of special arrangements (e.g. bell coverings etc.) that will be needed during their lessons.
  • It would be very useful to cover all books in a plastic material to aid easy wiping/sanitisation.
  • When the instrument/vocal lesson is over, students are responsible for cleaning the music stand. Materials will be provided in the classroom for this purpose under the supervision of the teacher. The teacher will spray the music stand for each student and the student will then wipe these down with paper roll and dispose of in the appropriate bin.

Group Theory Classes

  • All theory classes will take place in person at LSOM campus
  • Students must sit in the seats assigned to them by the teachers and follow all directions from their teachers.
  • Students will not be allowed share instruments, books, pencils etc. with other students so please ensure you/your child has everything they need.
  • Students will be given further direction on submitting work online where applicable.
  • It would be very useful to cover all books in a plastic material to aid easy wiping/sanitisation.
  • When the theory lesson is over, students are responsible for cleaning their own table and chair before class begins. Materials will be provided in the classroom for this purpose under the supervision of the teacher. The teacher will spray the table and chair for each student and the student will then wipe these down with paper roll and dispose of in the appropriate bin.
  • Physical distancing will be applied in so far as is possible and in a practical way to facilitate the learning environment.    Students are expected to take responsibility for maintaining appropriate social distance from each other at all times.

At present we are prioritising returning to our practical and theory classes. We hope to recommence our ensemble classes very shortly and will be in contact with you about this.
