Cecilia Madden, Principal
Performance is an integral part of music education so, in our curriculum, we provide multiple performing opportunities for our students through our in-house concerts, ensembles and festivals. We also complete our students’ musical education with an emphasis on concurrent study of musicianship and music theory to complement their practical studies. Past students, teachers and friends will be interested in checking out our Alumni page to see how you can stay connected to Limerick School of Music.
History of Limerick
School of Music
Limerick has a strong and vibrant musical and cultural tradition. Recognising the need to build on this, the City of Limerick Vocational Education Committee (the predecessor of the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board) established the School of Music in the same building the school still occupies in Mulgrave Street. This building was previously the nurses’ quarters for the City Infirmary in the main building in the same grounds. Mr John MacKenzie was appointed Principal of the school when it opened in January 1962.
Limerick luminaries including pianists Mr Charles Sciascia, Miss Josephine Sadlier and woodwind teacher Mr Paddy McCormack were the first appointees to the teaching staff. They were joined by Mr Johnny McMahon, Miss Eileen Cole Hamilton, Mrs Rosemary O’ Brien and Mr Granville Metcalf. In 1975, the pioneering instrument making department was founded under the guidance of Mr John Nash and Mr Arthur Grayson. Each year students from this department produce instruments of the highest standards.
Limerick School of Music has grown under the leadership of its management team to become one of the most respected music schools in Ireland. A faculty of highly qualified and motivated teachers have led the school in offering newly developed, child-centred practical and musicianship curriculums to enable each student to reach their full musical potential.
Limerick School of Music also provides music programmes at three partnership primary schools: Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary School, Janesboro; CBS and Presentation National Schools in Sexton Street in the city centre. As a student at Limerick School of Music, you are part of an exciting, vibrant and supportive community of musicians.
